What is the transfer portal?
The NCAA student-athlete transfer portal launched in 2018. It marked a change from when student-athletes had to get a release from one school to transfer to another and could be limited to where they transferred. The portal allows student-athletes to simply notify their current school and its compliance department that they intend to move on to another program. Entering the transfer portal does not mean a prospect has to transfer, it just means they can be recruited by other programs and take visits.
The window for undergraduate players to enter runs from Dec. 9 through Dec. 28. But those dates could be different for some—any player on a team who has a coach fired or leaves has a 30-day window to enter the transfer porta.
The spring window in April will remain, as the portal will only be 10 days long. The timeframe will last from April 16, 2025, to April 25, 2025, when it will shut down.
