Latest rumblings surrounding Georgia Tech coaching moves
Jackets need to replace Jason Semore, where will they look?
Last week, Georgia Tech saw Jason Semore take a promotion to be the defense coordinator as Marshall. Good move for him. Semore now gets the chance to showcase his ability to call plays for a solid Sun Belt program and add yet another knotch on his resume. A reminder, in 2021 he was the defensive coordinator for Valdosta State and helped the team reach the Division II national championship game. He has also previously been a DC at Montana and Colorado School of Mines, so there is not a lack of experience.
But where does this leave Georgia Tech? The Jackets saw tremendous growth out of seniors Charlie Thomas and Ace Eley. The linebacker position is not necessarily in flux, but the Jackets do have some rebuilding to do with that group that does possess young, in-house talent (Tyson Meguiez, Khatavian Franks and Trenilyas Tatum) and a pair of transfers that I expect to be starting (Andre White and Braelen Oliver).
With an opening where does Brent Key look? Well, if you are concerned about the linebackers, look no further than Kevin Sherrer. The hire of the veteran coach should do more than ensure quality linebacker play in 2023 . DC Andrew Thacker seems better suited in the management/ play-calling role as the Jackets defense turned up a notch when his focus was able to solely remain on calling plays.
So, what happens? Here’s what we do know. Brent Key is attempting to move quickly to make a move and fill this role. With a host of inquiries on the role, it will not necessarily be a move to bring in a special teams-centered staffer. This continues to turn in the direction of Key bringing in the best candidate regardless if special teams coordinator is on the coach’s resume. The Jackets have multiple options on staff that can step in and fill that role, but as seen over the past few seasons it is imperative to have that role filled.
