Georgia Tech WR Malik Rutherford enters the transfer portal
The Jackets lose another high-profile receiver
Georgia Tech WR Malik Rutherford announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal on Friday, per On3’s Hayes Fawcett.
Rutherford was a redshirt junior in 2024, and had a significant impact for the Yellow Jackets. He tallied 59 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns during the season.
Over the course of his career, Rutherford has racked up 133 career catches for 1,459 yards and seven touchdowns. He’s also tallied 12 rushes for 79 yards.
What is the transfer portal?
The NCAA student-athlete transfer portal launched in 2018. It marked a change from when student-athletes had to get a release from one school to transfer to another and could be limited to where they transferred. The portal allows student-athletes to simply notify their current school and its compliance department that they intend to move on to another program. Entering the transfer portal does not mean a prospect has to transfer, it just means they can be recruited by other programs and take visits.
The window for undergraduate players to enter runs from Dec. 9 through Dec. 28. But those dates could be different for some—any player on a team who has a coach fired or leaves has a 30-day window to enter the transfer porta.
The spring window in April will remain, as the portal will only be 10 days long. The timeframe will last from April 16, 2025, to April 25, 2025, when it will shut down.
The inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff will extend the postseason. After the portal closes in January, players on teams that will compete in the College Football Playoff and later bowl games will be allowed to enter an additional five-day transfer portal window.
Didn't Rutherford enter the portal last year but ultimately decide to stay at Tech?
